Upcoming 'Alchemic Exit' Show

September 3rd - 29th, 2016
DUTHIE GALLERY - Salt Spring Island

I am pleased to announce an upcoming show at Salt Spring Island's Duthie Gallery which will be opening September 3rd, 2016. The show entitled 'Alchemic Exit' features a mother and son collaboration of myself and Cole Bazin and will feature new paintings and drawings not yet featured on our websites.

The show is a creative exploration into the subject of escapism and how two different artistic points of view regard the subject and the theories of, and ways we use escapism to deal with the pressures of life. Both Cole and I dive into the alchemy of the practice of painting and the age old study of using natural artistic mediums to create something authentic and transforming a subject into something other than its original form.

The opening is Saturday September 3rd from 5-9pm and is open to the public. MAP

University of Instagram

I have been on Instagram for a while now and when trying to explain to someone why I prefer it to Facebook I was struggling to politely say “because there are less selfies”, but that’s not really the reason. There are plenty of selfies shared here too. What I realize is that there is a world of information and inspiration on Instagram that I get to customize for my interests, and my education of the art world in an incredibly easy way.

I always feel awkward sharing pieces of my life and work, but I know it’s the only way to introduce myself to someone halfway around the world, and to learn from them. Plus, I have been able to visit shows that I may otherwise have not known of, at galleries I didn’t even know existed… even if it is from my own studio, on my iPhone. The artists it has exposed me to has made me learn more about them, their work and the place they are from. And, the feeds shared by curators, art historians, writers and designers has been an endless source of knowledge. I am so grateful.

And that is why I prefer to spend my free time on Instagram.

WORD. Bow Down.

I usually gag at the thought of sharing quotes, inspirational statements or words of wisdom, but this one made me think, and want to work more seriously at my art, so I am sharing. Bold, heh?

“What another would have done as well as you, do not do it. What another would have said as well as you, do not say it; what another would have written as well, do not write it. Be faithful to that which exists nowhere but in yourself - and thus make yourself indispensable.”

André Gide

Another warm blue sky day on the Westcoast and I am thinking through my colour palette. After creating a thumbnail page of my recent work I realized that I have been locked down in a world of blues, golds and oranges for most of the year. I start out with the intention of making a bold start to something new but keep falling back to the same tubes that inevitably end up squeezed, twisted and lovingly handled over and over. What draws us to like certain colours? I wonder if it is our surroundings(of which mine has been a lot less grey these days), or maybe it’s a need for us to express ourselves with our personal tastes. I am definitely going to push away from this trend and try to go to new places. Possibly. Maybe. Or, maybe not.
